"Hieroglyph Type Writer" is a tool for entering or editing hieroglyphs for the lemmas displayed in the "Sign-Text-Editor" tab. "Hieroglyph Type Writer" can be found in the lower part of the BTS UI in the default view, next to the "Passport Editor" and "Lemmatizer".
In order to use the HTW you need to open the Sign-Text-Editor first and select a word for which hieroglyphs are to be entered/edited.
The HTW consists of five tab-sections:
A Toolbar:
Placed in the upper-right corner of the HTW, consists of:

A text-input field "Type here":
Here you can enter the hieroglyphs for a word chosen in the Sign-Text-Editor. Read more on Entering Hieroglyphs.
Two display-fields:
The upper one displays options for signs based on your input in "Type here". The lower one displays already chosen hieroglyphs as they will appear with the selected word in Sign-Text-Editor.
A tab-section "Select Single Glyphs":
This section serves for marking the hieroglyphic inversions. See more on inversions in the section on Entering Hieroglyphs.
